Choking your internet
The speed of your internet connection is the number one factor that shapes your use, experiences and level of frustration with web services (ie. email and web browsing). While internet connection speeds continue to leapfrog in the USA, Australia is largely derided for falling so far behind with its broadband links. Here in Vanuatu, most people fail even to reach the definition of “broadband” speed – so it is imperative that you keep your traffic to a minimum.

All the bits
Buy a name-brand computer from a big supplier, say Dell or Apple or HP, and it comes with a stack of stuff that may be needed should you ever have to re-install your system eg. after a hard-disk failure. Buy a computer from a smaller company, and you should still get a stack of stuff including the operating system, drivers for any special hardware, and any pre-installed applications such as Microsoft Office. What do you do with this stack?

The OS Battle Continues
The Operating System (OS) is the underlying software that “runs everything”. When you start up a word processor, or email application, or video editor or even a simple utility like a calculator applet (mini-application), it is the operating system that makes it happen. Look back when backing up
News came this week of a major Australian organisation that turned to its backups when it really needed them, only to find out that some software bug had been destroying the backups for months, unnoticed. There's nothing like burning your fingers to make sure you avoid touching a hot surface in future! The moral? Test your backups.
