In addition to the processor, a critical computer component is memory. As with humans, there is short-term memory and long-term memory. Long-term memory is represented by the hard-disk (to be covered in a future article. Computers keep short-term stuff in RAM (Random Access Memory).

The “brains” that drive the computer, the processor does most of the work in getting other components to work together and producing the end results that you see and hear (and maybe feel) when using your computer. Upgrading from an old computer to a new one is a bit like moving house – lots of “stuff” has to be transferred. Alas, it is no easier to move computer than it is to move house. You need to carefully pack everything for transportation at one end, and then unpack everything into the right place at the other. At least with computers, everything gets duplicated so you always have the old one to go back to if you forgot something.

With DVD players readily available and getting cheaper by the day, using a computer to watch DVD movies is not a common use for IT. Smooth viewing (no stutters in sound or breaks in the picture) and an acceptably high-quality picture need a relatively high specification and therefore expensive computer. Even so, there may be times that an alternative DVD player is useful. What is required?

The internet not only gives a global voice to anyone with internet access, it also allows global access to knowledge. Much of human knowledge can be found online, although large proportions may be hidden in pay-for-use databases. Nonetheless, the internet can readily provide additional information or even second opinions for almost anything you can think of. One such area is health – but be sure you can trust what you find.

The path of an email from sender to receiver is unpredictable – delays, detours, blockages and disbelieving guards. Yet still, they make it through the numerous communications links, mail servers, routers and all the other stuff that makes up the World Wide Web. Getting email from one place to another demonstrates one of the main objectives of the founders of the internet – resilience in the face of unreliable or damaged technology.
