Computer hardware and software continues to improve and develop
incredibly fast. Although the overall speed that a computer processor
(it’s “brain”) works at seems to have reached a bit of a plateau
recently, all the other bits and pieces continue to push the technical
boundaries. The end result feels like the computer you buy today will
be obsolete in just a few months!

For the past few years, “open source” software has been sweeping around
the world, growing in popularity and increasing in sophistication and
variety. It is actually much more prevalent than many people realize,
and is something that all computer users should be aware of. It has the
potential to greatly change the way information technology is made
available to people.

There are two aspects to securing email privacy ; the email itself, and
the transmission method for sending/receiving emails. This column has
previously covered the use of encryption software for making an
individual email unreadable by anyone except the intended recipient,
however this entails both sender and receiver installing & using
the encryption software. What about all the emails that aren’t
encrypted?

As of Friday 1st July, TVL have amended their email service to prevent
or at least reduce the amount of spam and virus emails being sent out
of Vanuatu. TVL have additionally activated anti-spam measures for
incoming emails, so that all their customers should receive much less
unwanted email (saving both time and money).

Having problems sending emails out of Vanuatu? Getting return error
messages saying that your email was refused or rejected as spam, or
saying something like “Remote host said: 550 host is listed in
bl.spamcop.net” ? You have become the latest victim of an RBL.
